Thursday, April 13, 7-8pm EST
MINUS SPACE is excited to present the exhibition Lynne Harlow: Lodestar, which premieres a suite of new sculpture in glass by the Providence, Rhode Island-based artist. This is the artist’s fourth solo exhibition at the gallery since 2007.
For her exhibition Lodestar, Lynne Harlow presents a configuration of new small-scale, glass artworks, which are cast from molds taken of specific rocks collected by the artist at personally-resonant sites in the United States and Europe, such as Downeast, Maine; Cape Cod, Massachusetts; and Delphi, Greece.
The term lodestar refers to a guiding star, such as the North Star Polaris, which serves to help navigate individuals through space at night. According to the artist, her sculptures are intended to both “guide and anchor the viewer in the world by fusing the natural and humanmade into a singular, intimate object that is translucent and yet feels hefty in the hand.”
Harlow’s new works build upon her decades-long investigation of the intersection of color, light, and material expressed in a highly-reductive visual language. The artist’s glass sculptures are characteristically monochromatic and possess a single ethereal color, such as vibrant yellow, glowing orange, celestial blue, or blush pink. Additional new works by the artist, including a suite of silk organza on wooden panel pieces, will also be on view in her exhibition.
Throughout her decades-long studio practice, Harlow has contemplated, “How little is enough? How much can be taken away before a piece crumbles? I arrive at my pieces by reducing physical and visual information. This process of reduction, a steady taking away, is ultimately intended to be an act of generosity. In each piece I’m looking for the point at which these reductions allow me to give the most. It’s an appealing contradiction because it prompts one to reconsider the concept of abundance and the nature of giving.”
Lynne Harlow would like to personally thank the Pollock-Krasner Foundation for the time and resources to conceive this new body of work, as well as collaborator Steve Easton of Steve Easton Cast Glass in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, who guided their fabrication.
The artist will give a free, online public talk via Zoom on Thursday, April 13, 7-8pm EST. Register
She will also lead an in-person exhibition walk-through on Saturday, May 6, 3pm. Masks are suggested for the health of all guests.
